So, between being posted to Amsterdam for a while, launching an important new product at work, and moving house, I’ve had no time for anything but a few brief Twitter posts recently. OK, that’s not entirely true. I have spent oodles of time with my lovely wife and dear son and I have been reading steadily.
Good things I’ve read recently include:
Fin de Siecle Vienna, Carl Schorske
Metropole, Ferenc Karinthy
Time and Free Will, Henri Bergson
Selected Letters of Vincent Van Gogh
Seeking Whom He May Devour, Fred Vargas
I’ll have more to say in other posts, but the Van Gogh and the Bergson in particular blew me away. Van Gogh, for the letters’ raw portrayal of his development as an artist and his later struggles that ended with his suicide. Bergson, for making me squint very hard to wrap my head around pure duration. It may just be enough to send me in for my third time through A La Recherche du Temps Perdu. I don’t take much convincing that way…
And with that, I think I’ll have a glass of scotch and head for bed.
